Prepare the Filling:
Heat a large skillet over medium heat and add the vegetable oil or butter.
Add the chopped onion and sauté until softened and lightly browned, about 3 minutes.
Add the ground beef to the skillet. Season with salt and pepper. Use a spatula to break up the meat as it cooks.
Add the Cheese:
Once the beef is browned and cooked through, divide it into 4 portions in the skillet. Place a slice of cheese over each portion. Let the cheese melt, then lightly chop and mix the cheese into the beef.
Assemble the Sandwiches:
Spread mayonnaise and ketchup on the inside of the toasted hero rolls.
Add a layer of shredded lettuce and tomato slices.
Spoon the cheesy beef mixture onto the rolls, dividing evenly among the sandwiches.
Serve:
Serve the sandwiches warm with chips or fries on the side, if desired.
- Customization: Add hot sauce, pickles, or caramelized onions for extra flavor.
- Cheese Options: American cheese is traditional, but provolone or pepper jack works well too.
- Bread Alternatives: If you can’t find hero rolls, use hoagie rolls, brioche buns, or even sliced bread.
- Storage: The filling can be made ahead and stored in the fridge for up to 2 days. Reheat and assemble sandwiches when ready to eat.
