Ingredients
  

  • 1 lb ground beef or ground turkey
  • ½ medium onion finely chopped
  • ½ green bell pepper finely chopped (optional)
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • ¾ cup ketchup
  • 1 tbsp tomato paste
  • 2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tsp yellow mustard or Dijon
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • ½ tsp chili powder optional, for mild heat
  • 4 –6 hamburger buns
  • Optional: butter for toasting buns

Instructions
 

  • Brown the Beef
  • In a large skillet over medium heat, cook ground beef until browned. Drain excess fat.
  • Add Veggies & Garlic
  • Stir in onion, bell pepper (if using), and garlic. Cook 3–4 minutes, until softened.
  • Make It Sloppy
  • Stir in ketchup, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, brown sugar, chili powder, and a pinch of salt and pepper.
  • Simmer on low for 8–10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until thickened.
  • Toast the Buns (Optional)
  • Lightly butter and toast hamburger buns in a skillet or oven for extra flavor.
  • Serve
  • Spoon the sloppy joe mixture generously onto the buns. Serve immediately!

Notes

  • Make-Ahead Friendly: Sloppy joe mixture stores well in the fridge for up to 4 days or frozen for 3 months.
  • Additions: Stir in a handful of shredded cheese for a cheesy version, or top with pickles or coleslaw for a tangy twist.
  • Low-carb idea: Serve over baked sweet potatoes or in lettuce cups.
